Healthcare workers (HCW) are known to put their lives at risk as they have to be in closed contact with viral infected patients for long time. Another group that is heavily affected by viral infection is immunocompromised patients like asthma, diabetes and burnt victim patients. Their antibody is weakened by these common diseases and are more susceptible to be critically-illed or to lose their lives. Ideally, HCW should be protected by placing the patients in a negative-pressure isolation space and an immunocompromised patient should be protected by placing him/her in a positive--pressure isolation space. The dual-mode full-body isolation pod is the answer to protect these two groups of people from viral infection.

The negative-pressure mode creates negative pressure, or vacuum, inside the isopod. a microcontroller is used to maintained the pressure within the range described by the Airborne Infection Isolation (AII) room of the United Stated of America Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The positive-pressure mode creates internal pressure that is slightly higher than the atmospheric to ensure contaminated air from immunocompromised patient inside the pod. Our isopod these two modes with the use of two HEPA filters and an in-house control system.

Problem Statement

  • Healthcare workers (HCW) are known to put their lives at risk as they have to be in closed contact with infected patients for long time.
  • Immunocompromised patients are vulnerable to be critically illed or lose their lives if they get viral infection.

Novelty and Inventiveness

  • Negative pressure mode: The control module maintains the pressure so that it operate within the range described by the Airborne Infection Isolation (AII) room of the United Stated of America Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
    • This is used to treat viral infected patient so that the infected air does not escape and infecting the HCW.
  • Positive pressure mode: The control module maintains the pressure slightly higher than the atmospheric to ensure the infected air from surrounding from infecting th e immunocompromised patient.

Applicability and Benefits

  • This dual pressure modes widens the purpose of our isolation pod and it remains relevent even after the Covid 19 pandemic.
  • Applicability: Immunocompromised patients ranges from asthma patients to burnt victims.
